When you think of mass shootings, Iowa is just about the last place that comes to mind. This is a state of small cities, big ranches, and law-abiding gun owners who support the Second Amendment.
It’s not like Chicago, New York, or other blue cities which are raked by gunfire every night. However, a recent nightclub shooting in Iowa has people alarmed and horrified. Here’s what happened…
Cedar Rapids Shootdown
Early Sunday morning, crowds were enjoying a party inside the Taboo Nightclub in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The city is a small place with a population of only 132,000, and it’s not the kind of location you’d expect armed gunfights to break out.
Though early Sunday morning, that’s exactly what happened around 1:30 a.m. when police heard shooting coming from the club during a 1990s party night. They reacted immediately, leaving patrol to secure the crime scene.
It is not clear who was arrested and police say the investigation is still happening. There were dozens of injuries in the shooting who were rushed to hospitals, and two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene from their gunshot wounds.

‘This Is Not Who We Are”
A statement from Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell spoke out strongly against the violence saying, “this is not who we are.” O’Donnell also said the shooting shows the importance of “resolving” problems without violence.
This shooting happened in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids and has shocked the community.
It’s still unclear why it happened, but police are hard at work and still interviewing witnesses. According to police, the scene was secured and safe soon after the shooting, but it appears the perpetrator hasn’t been caught yet.
Police have been sweeping the nightclub for evidence, marking the location of shell casings, and collecting items full of evidence to try to figure out exactly what happened and why.

Gun Violence and Who’s to Blame
We are told the crisis in gun violence is because of the availability of guns in this country; yet time and time again, it turns out guns used in crime were illegally obtained or being used by criminals with long rap sheets and prior records.
We don’t know yet exactly why this shooting broke out at a 90s party in the town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Though in most cases, these awful situations turn out to be drug-related or done by people with lengthy criminal records.
The fact of the matter is the more these kinds of incidents happen, the worse and more vulnerable society gets. People need to feel safe when they’re out at a party, and it’s horrifying that after two years of COVID, these kinds of things are happening so often in America.
