Those who wish to carry a firearm have an obligation to become proficient with their carry firearm, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t shoot just for the fun of it. One of the ways I enjoy the shooting sports is through competition shooting. There are some skill development crossovers that can help someone perform better for both self defense and competition shooting. However, my interests in shooting USPSA, as pictured in this week’s Photo Friday post, was purely for the fun of the sport. So far, I’ve only shot USPSA, but I have some interest in trying out IDPA and SASS competitions. What’s your favorite shooting sport?
Photo Friday: Competition Shooting Is FUN!

You know, my favorite competition is simply competing with my friends and my Son at the range or in our back yard. Sounds corny but that is where the most joy comes from.

Shooting is fun, its the thing gun grabbers don’t get, you go shooting with family and friends meet other like minded people and all have safe fun enjoying the shooting sports. We are not all rambo types waiting to take to the streets with our war weapons. It’s a sport just like other sports.
Same here as far as just fun competition-like shooting with pistol and carbine among friends and family–but many years now an avid competition skeet shooter (nothing quite like a 12G surrounded by empty hulls ;)).
I’ve shooted hunters matches with scoped rifle. It was good to maintein a high level of accuracy during off season.
I fancy to try fitds, the italian ipsc division, expecially 3gun matches. They are a good way to dramatically improve gun handling and safe manipulation, though not the best way to improve defense skills.
Have you planned your next match Destinee?
Hi Des. Our Australian competitions are a bit tamer that those available in the US. Any resemblance to shooting for defensive purposes (USPSA and IDPA) is strickly a no-no. Personally, I favour Service Pistol (toned down IPSC), and Field Pistol, which allows us to shoot .44 & .45 caliber handguns at metal animal targets at up to 100 yards. I shot my new Kimber .45 today out to 100 yards – now that was challengeing.
