Not too long ago, I got my first chance to shoot a .50 cal rifle: a Barrett Model 99. With how large .50 BMG cartridges are, I prepared myself for some pretty substantial recoil. It was there, but not as bad as I had anticipated. What I didn’t anticipate, however, is the concussive force of air that rushes back toward the shooter. It was like being hit in the face – with air, an odd sensation, to be sure, but, thankfully, not a painful one. I enjoyed the feedback the rifle gives while shooting .50 cal. It may be my new favorite shooting experience, possibly even more fun than full auto (it’s a pretty close call). Now, I need to get my hands on a Ma Deuce…
