I was happy to see the Ruger LC380 at SHOT Show 2013 because of what it offers to newer shooters – especially newer female shooters. I’ve heard and seen so many examples of ladies who first decide to purchase a firearm for self defense.
Out of a combination of lack of information and shooting experience, or because their husband/boyfriend/brother/whoever. picked it out for them, some women end up with a snappy little .380. They take it to the range once or twice, and find shooting it so uncomfortable that they never try it again.
The Ruger LC380 is Ruger’s response to that situation. It’s built upon the larger frame of the LC9 (as opposed to the small LCP – Ruger’s earlier model .380, which is known for its kick) to make it easier to handle. It also has a dual recoil spring that makes the slide easier to rack (nice for smaller-framed shooters). And, the soft .380 ACP gives the little Ruger a gentle kick.
These features make the Ruger LC380 an attractive option as an introductory pistol, for any new shooter.
@peter3101 I really don’t know if it will sell too well or not. I know they sold one – to my wife, she is still waiting for the Brady period so no feed back yet.
But I can say that it does have advantages over the LC9 for a concealed carry. Weight of an LC9 is 17.1 OZ while the LC380 is 17.2OZ, a little heavier yes, but the weight of the rounds makes a big difference. Typical .380 bullet (not complete cartridge) is 90 gr. whereas a 9 MM is around 115. Meaning that overall weight is very close to the same, with the LC380 maybe getting a small advantage. Capacity? This one really confuses me a bit, LC9 is 7 + 1, LC380 is 7 +1. Caliber is really the only thing left, and with that comes the felt recoil. a .380 in a relatively heavy package will mean a better shooting experience on the range. As far as energy goes, I’m not laughing if you “only” shoot me with a .380
I would love to see a video review, with an accompanying write-up on the S&W .380 Bodyguard. I just purchased mine at the end of April, and I really love it. I am undecided about my CC holster for it yet, but I watch your YouTube videos, and read your arms guide articles, and really enjoy your helpful information, and enjoy learning from you. I would love to see your review of the weapon, as well as ideas as the best way to CC holster this weapon this summer, especially if you plan to wear skirts or dresses, and dress on the more famine side..
