The 5 Best Leupold Scopes for your AR-15 Reviewed
The other day I started looking for a new scope for my AR15. Since Leupold scopes have a great reputation I did extensive research and want to share my results with you to save you time. I am looking for a scope that will not break the bank, will be versatile for short, mid, and long-range hunting in full/good light. We’ll be Choosing the Best Leupold Scope for AR-15!
Best for Close Range Hunting: Leupold Mark 5HD Rifle Scope
Leupold crafted a clear and versatile scope with a vast range of magnification with the Mark 5HD 7-25x56mm rifle scope. What’s best is that gun enthusiasts won’t have any issues with the weight of this scope, which comes to just 13 ounces.
The 5HD is packed with several excellent features. You’ll fall in love right away with the feel, shape, and size of the elevation and windage knobs of this Leupold scope. It has a sturdy and positive feel with audible clicks when being adjusted. With some tweaks, the brand has now placed the elevation under zero m, which is advantageous in some shooting scenarios.
With two reticle options for the second focal plane, you have the choice between the TMOA Plus and the Impact-60 reticles. The difference between the two is that the TMOA Plus carries a more straightforward design with an open target point at the center, while the Impact-60 has Xmas Tree-type horizontal and vertical hold-offs. Both reticles will take some time for you to get used to, but both can contribute to a more precise and more powerful shooting experience.
One of the main selling points of this riflescope is its impressive brightness and clarity. You will never complain about low light settings and glare when you have this scope attached to your AR-15. The brand is confident with its HD Edge-to-Edge Lens Clarity and HD Light Management System. Leupold’s lens coating also helps negate the effect of micro-flaws on the lens.
This scope can keep up with the wear and tear, and exposure to extreme climates as it is waterproof, fog-proof, and shockproof. Leupold has tested this scope to up to 33-foot depths in varying pressure alterations and has observed no cracks, leaks, or anything that can shorten its lifespan.
Pros

- Two reticle options for its second focal plane.
- Integrated HD Edge-to-Edge Lens Clarity and HD Light Management System.
- Impressive lightweight design for its size.

Introduction to Choosing the Best Leupold Scope for Your AR-15
Looking for the best Leupold scopes for your AR-15 rifle? There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, as the ideal scope depends on the type of shooting you plan to do, and your personal preferences. However, with a range of price points, features, and magnification levels, there are plenty of options to choose from that will help you achieve your shooting goals.
Considerations When Selecting a Leupold Scope
For those who plan to shoot at longer distances, a variable optic with higher magnification is an excellent choice. The Leupold VX-Freedom or Leupold VX-3 are both great scopes with crystal clear glass, and enough magnification to hit distant targets. If you prefer a red dot sight, the EOTech EXPS or Primary Arms SLx are both excellent options.
For close-range shooting or home defense, a holographic or illuminated reticle can help you acquire targets quickly in low-light conditions. Consider the Leupold Mark AR or Vortex Optics Crossfire II for a decent scope with excellent light transmission and brightness settings.
Choosing the Right Scope for Close-Range Shooting
When selecting a scope, it’s important to consider your effective range, as well as the magnification range and lens coatings. A scope with a larger objective lens (measured in mm) will gather more light for a clearer view, especially in low-light conditions. However, this can also make the scope heavier and harder to handle. Consider the first number in the scope’s designation, as it indicates the magnification power. For example, a 3-9x40mm scope is variable and can magnify between 3x and 9x.
Long-range shooters will want a scope with an elevation adjustment that can compensate for bullet drop at longer distances. Law enforcement and military use may require a higher magnification scope with a duplex reticle for improved accuracy.
When choosing a scope, it’s important to find the right balance between features and price point. Some scopes may offer great value, but may not have all the key features you’re looking for. Others may be more expensive, but offer better optics or longer battery life.
Ultimately, the best Leupold scope for your AR-15 platform is a matter of personal preference. Some shooters prefer iron sights or a low-power variable optic for close-quarters combat, while others prefer a long-range scope with a higher magnification for long shots. Whatever your shooting style, there’s a Leupold scope out there that will fit your needs and help you achieve your goals.
When shopping for the best scope for your AR-15 rifle, one of the most important factors to consider is your price range. A quality scope can be a significant investment, so it’s important to choose a scope that is within your budget.
If you’re looking to shoot at longer ranges, a new scope with a larger objective lens (measured in mm) and higher magnification can help you hit your mark at a long shot. Holographic sights or red dot sights are also popular choices for longer ranges. For those who prefer a good scope for close-range shooting, a low-power variable optic or holographic sight with a generous eye relief can help you acquire targets quickly.
Long-range shooting requires a scope with a reasonable price that can offer a clear view and quality optics. Leupold rifle scopes are a great choice for long-range shooters, with many models featuring a picatinny rail for easy mounting on your AR rifle.
When choosing the right scope, it’s important to consider your needs as a shooter. Battery power is important for scopes with illuminated reticles, while first focal plane scopes may offer better performance at longer ranges. Maximum magnification can also play a role in your decision, with some scopes offering much magnification for a close-up view.
Leupold is known for its excellent scopes, offering some of the clearest glass and best optics on the market. Their AR-15 scopes are an excellent choice for those who want the best performance for their rifle, whether they’re shooting at longer ranges or close-range targets in low light conditions.
The best AR-15 red dots are those that offer a great combination of price, build quality, and performance. A red dot sight with an mm objective lens can help you see much light in low-light conditions, while x power can give you a clear view at longer distances.
Whether you’re a long-range shooter or prefer close-quarters combat, the right scope can make all the difference. By taking the time to find the best scope for your needs, you can hit your target every time with the naked eye, at any range.
For those who plan to shoot at both long range and close range, the best rifle scopes are those that offer a combination of mm scope, x magnification, and generous eye relief. Leupold has many excellent rifle scopes that are versatile enough to be used in a variety of shooting situations.
When shopping for the best AR-15 scope, it’s important to consider your needs and the types of shooting you’ll be doing. For long-range shooting, a scope with a second focal plane and a larger mm rifle scope can help you see targets at longer distances. However, for close-quarters combat, a scope with a low power variable optic and a smaller mm scope can help you acquire targets quickly.

Conclusion- Best Leupold AR15 Scope
The clear winner of my roundup is the VX-3I LRP 8.5-25x50mm Side Focus FFP TMR. It is affordable and perfect for mid to long-range shooting (and it works well at short range). It is not illuminated but the objective lens is large to provide a bright sight picture. The reticle is on the First Focal Plane, making it change apparent size with the magnification. That allows for better range estimation. If I had more money available I would totally buy the Mark 6. But for now, the VX-3I will do.
As always, just shoot me an email with any questions or hiccups. Happy to help move things along.
